At low flow, the main issue for a long throat flume is keeping material from deposition on the wetted surfaces.   At intermediate flows, velocities in the throat of 1 m/s are sufficient to keep the flume clean and operating within the parameters of the Standard.   At higher flows, a possibility exists of surface scour.

At high flows, the main design criteria are durability and cost.   These are issues of construction rather than hydraulics.

Surface scour becomes a problem if there is grit or other abrasive material being carried by the flow.   Large flumes may have high throat velocities (up to 3m/s.) which can cut into the base of the flume sides.   To protect the surface, the flume can be cast in Granolithic concrete with ablative web for additional protection.
