Flumes accelerate the water by contraction of the cross-section of the channel.  There are many different contraction geometries: Long Throat, Short Throat, Cutthroat and others.

Two types are of particular interest, the long-throat for high flow and the Cutthroat for low flow.

Flumes are under development for the measurement of low flows in circular drains and sewers
